About Summer School

The aims of this educational activity are to inform participants of the global and European metrology infrastructures currently in place to support the clinical, biotechnology and food sectors. It will describe the fundamentals of the primary methods of analysis used to assure the metrological traceability of pure primary calibrators and matrix reference materials and in the development of reference measurement procedures.

The curriculum is set to inform participants of the basic principles of developing reference measurement procedures, providing measurement results with direct traceability to the SI, and how these are applied to enabling comparable measurement results for a range of current biological and biochemical measurement challenges.

This will provide the perfect environment for NMIs/DIs who wish to establish or increase their activities in the biochemistry/biology sector to quickly get up to speed with current approaches and establish links to current NMI/DI work programmes.

After this summer school participants will:

  • Know the current global and European metrology infrastructures to support comparable measurement results for the clinical, biotechnology and food sectors;
  • Understand the basic principles of the primary reference measurement procedures for the provision of pure chemical primary calibrators for organic molecules and proteins as well as the calibration-free ddPCR techniques for nucleic acids;
  • Understand the basics of reference measurement procedures for the characterisation of matrix reference materials and the provision of matrix-based reference measurement services;
  • Gain insights into how the latest biochemical metrology research is impacting on current priority challenges (e.g. Neurodegenerative diseases, Cancer, metrology for the routine monitory of health status markers and food contaminants);
  • Develop a network of contacts leading biochemical metrology research projects.

Target group: Early-career professionals or staff starting biochemical metrology programmes employed at National Metrology Institutes are prioritized
