Former head of the Division for Chemical Physics and Explosion Protectionat PTB, the National Metrology Institute of Germany from 2015 - 2024 and head of the new Department for Metrology in Chemistry at PTB before that from 2002 - 2015.

He represented Germany at the Consultative Committee for Chemistry and Biology of the Meter Convention (CCQM) from 2002 – 2024, where he was also head of the Working Group on the Mole that was in charge to prepare the revised definition of the SI unit mole.

He was also a member of the EURAMET Technical Committee for Chemistry (TC-MC) from 2002 – 2024 and was chair of that committee from 2007 – 2011.
